Did you have to do boot> boot -a to get it to boot properly off of sd0a, recompile kernel or something else? When I try, I never get it to see "root on sd0a swap on sd0b dump on sd0b" by itself, at least without boot -a or a kernel recompile... By chance, have you tried the same with non -current - just wondering if it boots and detects ok with root on sd0a? Thanks!
