Hi, I'm trying to use USB disks as backup devices and I'm finding that I have problems when I plug in more than two USB drives. I'm using 250G laptop disks powered from the USB cable.
Is anyone else seeing this sort of problem? Would an upgrade to 4.2 help? The first two always seem to work fine (with the "sd*" device allocated) as per: -- umass1 at uhub6 port 3 configuration 1 interface 0 umass1: LaCie SA LaCie Hard Drive USB, rev 2.00/0.00, addr 4 umass1: using SCSI over Bulk-Only scsibus3 at umass1: 2 targets sd2 at scsibus3 targ 1 lun 0: <WDC WD25, 00BEVS-11UST0, > SCSI2 0/direct fixed sd2: 238475MB, 238475 cyl, 64 head, 32 sec, 512 bytes/sec, 488397168 sec total -- However, the third disk I plug in gives me strife. It will get an "sd*" device allocated some of the time (about 1 in 3). Sometimes I have a run where it works ok 4 times in a row and sometimes if fails 5 or more times before it works. --- umass2: at uhub6 port 1 (addr 5) disconnected scsibus4 detached umass2 detached umass2 at uhub6 port 1 configuration 1 interface 0 umass2: LaCie SA LaCie Hard Drive USB, rev 2.00/0.00, addr 5 umass2: using SCSI over Bulk-Only scsibus4 at umass2: 2 targets umass2: BBB reset failed, IOERROR umass2: BBB bulk-in clear stall failed, IOERROR umass2: BBB bulk-out clear stall failed, IOERROR --- Give up waiting and re-plug the disk --- umass2: at uhub6 port 1 (addr 5) disconnected scsibus4 detached umass2 detached umass2 at uhub4 port 5 configuration 1 interface 0 umass2: LaCie SA LaCie Hard Drive USB, rev 2.00/0.00, addr 5 umass2: using SCSI over Bulk-Only scsibus4 at umass2: 2 targets umass2: BBB reset failed, IOERROR umass2: BBB bulk-in clear stall failed, IOERROR umass2: BBB bulk-out clear stall failed, IOERROR umass2: BBB reset failed, IOERROR umass2: BBB bulk-in clear stall failed, IOERROR umass2: BBB bulk-out clear stall failed, IOERROR --- And again --- umass2: at uhub4 port 5 (addr 5) disconnected scsibus4 detached umass2 detached umass2 at uhub4 port 5 configuration 1 interface 0 umass2: LaCie SA LaCie Hard Drive USB, rev 2.00/0.00, addr 5 umass2: using SCSI over Bulk-Only scsibus4 at umass2: 2 targets umass2: BBB bulk-in clear stall failed, IOERROR umass2: BBB bulk-out clear stall failed, IOERROR umass2: BBB reset failed, IOERROR umass2: BBB bulk-in clear stall failed, IOERROR umass2: BBB bulk-out clear stall failed, IOERROR umass2: BBB reset failed, IOERROR umass2: BBB bulk-in clear stall failed, IOERROR umass2: BBB bulk-out clear stall failed, IOERROR --- yada yada --- umass2: at uhub6 port 4 (addr 5) disconnected scsibus4 detached umass2 detached umass2 at uhub6 port 4 configuration 1 interface 0 umass2: LaCie SA LaCie Hard Drive USB, rev 2.00/0.00, addr 5 umass2: using SCSI over Bulk-Only scsibus4 at umass2: 2 targets sd3 at scsibus4 targ 1 lun 0: <WDC WD25, 00BEVS-11UST0, > SCSI2 0/direct fixed sd3: 238475MB, 238475 cyl, 64 head, 32 sec, 512 bytes/sec, 488397168 sec total --- And it worked.. The other disks don't seem to be affected by this. If I unplug 2 disks (leave one plugged in) and the plug them back in again, it's again the third disk which misbehaves no matter which disk I plug in first (doesn't seem to depend on the physical disk involved). I'm plugging the disks into an external powered 4 port hub: ---- uhub6 at uhub4 port 3 uhub6: Genesys Logic USB2.0 Hub, rev 2.00/7.02, addr 2 uhub6: 4 ports with 4 removable, self powered, single transaction translator ---- But I get the same errors if I plug the third disk into the on-board USB ports instead. It also doesn't seem to matter if the disks are powered separately or powered from the USB port.
