Could you please elaborate on "arbitrary XML" vs "certain schemas"? My understanding is that Dublin Core is being stored as XML to go to the media package and this would work for other metadata schema as well (LOM [1]). Things become blurry with iTunes U metadata (ID3 vs. XML/RSS, [2], [3]) and YouTube EDU, with other catalogues (technical metadata, workflow metadata etc.) not following any standard when it comes to (file) format.
