here is my setup:
a k6 233 system with win 98, win NT, and slackware linux, and an intel
etherexpress pro ethernet card.
a 386 dx 40 (don't laugh =) with 8 megs of ram and slackware linux. no
ethernet card yet - but will get one soon.
at school, we each get one ethernet jack (at my dorm at least - some dorms
give 4 jacks for 2 people but lucky me =). here is how i want it to end
up:
ethernet jack --> 386 --> k6
so here come a slew of questions:
1. will all the daemons on the linux box run perfectly normally under this
setup? i.e. can outside people telnet to the 386 even if it's
masquerading? (i think i know this one, but i'm just checking)
2. physically - what hardware do i need? i know i need an ethernet card in
both systems. but as far as what cables, hubs etc i need i am clueless.
the jacks in the dorms are rj45.
2a. any inspiration on where to shop for the answers to #2? (radio shack?)
3. once i have all the parts from #2 - what does the setup look like?
everyone bust out your ascii art skills for this one =)
4. under this setup, is there any way for me to mount the drives on the
k6, on the 386? i.e., if i want to be able to share my NTFS files on the
k6 with the world, and i can correctly configure ftpd, is it possible?
5. is there anything that acts like this:
my nice princeton 17" monitor
|
|
----some switch?----
| |
| |
386 vid board k6 vid board
that way i wouldn't need to bring a 2nd monitor up...
that is it for now. i did check the web thoroughly for the answers to
these questions, but they must have been too basic for the howto on
ip-masq, and no one else seems to answer them...
thanks!!
