I fixed this...in case anyone noticed the post. I didn't see the
archives when I joined, but found the answer there when I got the link
to them in my post itself. A bit of prayer and 24 hours worth of
reading later, it turned out I was staring at the answer of God knows
how long: irq conflict. eth0 and eth1 had the same setting.
