Would that we had the power in both cases to hold plebicites ensuring that the people rather than competing states determined their destiny. In the absence of such plebicites, polls have shown the majority of Taiwanese favour their independent status and that a majority in the predominantly Russian-speaking Donbas and Crimea would have favoured autonomy and even independence from the Ukrainian state which they regarded as oppressive followng Maidan in 2014.
