Absolutely, Marx was always "working things out" and thus it is unwise to
pick a sentence from this 1852 letter or a passage from that 1859 preface
as the definitive statement of "Historical Materialism." That isn't how
I operate.

After wrestling for two decades (off and on) with the question of Marx's
relationship to the 1821 pamphlet, *The Source and Remedy of the National
Difficulties, *I spent two months
<https://econospeak.blogspot.com/p/posts-on-socially-necessary-labour-time.html>
systematically going through the *Grundrisse*,* Capital *(including
drafts), *Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy*, and *Theories
of Surplus Value* to examine minutely how Marx addressed the concept of
socially necessary labour time. This definitely showed Marx "working things
out," sometimes leaving things out that he had worked out.

When I cite a passage from the *Grundrisse*, it is not because that passage
gives me a thrill -- although it may -- but because I evaluate that passage
as exemplary of Marx's larger project.

For example, when I cite Marx's attention to "disposable time" in the
*Grundrisse,
*I am doing so fully aware of his intense attention to the 1821 pamphlet
and disposable time FIVE YEARS later in the drafts for *Theories of Surplus
Value *and Engel's discussion of it in the preface to Volume 2 of *Capital*.
I am acutely aware of Marx's avoidance of disposable time in *Capital*
itself and his perfunctory citation of *The Source and Remedy* there but
also the significance he attributed to his chapter 10 on "The Working Day."

Cheers,

Tom Walker (Sandwichman)
