I think, Hari, it is quite a fascinating question historically for the Marxist left. One of the reasons that I set up the Encyclopedia of Anti-Revisionism Online was that I wanted to see the actual origin of "post Stalin socialism" as it effect the U.S. primarily but also the Imperialist countries more generally.
In terms of "origins" I trace this back to various sundry policies of the Moscow oriented communist movement starting with the "3rd Period" at the beginning of the great depression (the "ultra-left anti-United Front" period), the Popular Front (based on Dimitrov's United Front Against Fascism ), the Comintern's super centralization, the desolation of the Comintern in 1943 and the post war machinations of the communist movement in response to the rise of the cold war. That was while Stalin was alive of course. You reminded me of "Khruschevism" of course and the Sino-Soviet split in the early to mid 60s. So in many ways yes, this was fundamentally different than the Trotskyist movement which, as I noted was really about the elevation of tactical differences to one of grand strategic ones. Groups split in the Trotskyist movement on how to analyze the class nature of the USSR (and later China, etc). But ultimately if was "failure to launch" in response to the class struggle and the imability, for the most part, to lead significant sections of the working class, more concerned about "being right" in petty ideological polemics than on how to intervene.
