Of the 1200 Israelis who died on October 7 last year, about 400 were soldiers. Of the remaining 800, a large proportion were killed when the Israeli military bombed the Hamas members who were holding them captive (in houses, cars, etc).
The real problem with the Hamas attack was that it gave Israel a pretext for launching a genocidal war on the people of Gaza. They would have continued attacking Gaza anyway, but October 7 gave them a pretext for intensifying and speeding up their drive to kill or expel the Palestinians of Gaza.
