If Marx had moved to Texas he would have had to leave along with many of the 
other Germans who lived there because of the Civil War. The Germans were mostly 
Unionists. In the Hill country town of Comfort, a large group of Germans were 
on their way out to join the Union forces and were caught by Confederate 
militia and all murdered. German was the second language of Texas then and was 
the main language of schools in their areas. It was only after the legislature 
passed laws banning German from being spoken or printed upon US entry into WWI, 
that it lost its primacy.
