That's the problem with 'statistics'..

Used to be almost every spam protection vendor claimed ridiculously high numbers, but that is because they processed 'every' attempt.

Since most email servers utilize thing like RBL's and rate limiters, the SMTP layer doesn't need to process so much.. A single bad IP in the old days could attempt to send hundred's of thousands of spam messages, which affected ratio's..

And statistically, it depends on how many users you have on the system, but even more importantly.. how many domains.. at least for spam 'attempts'.. And of course, are those email addresses posted anywhere publicly..

Statistically, it is better to consider..

Of XX Connection attempts, how many were possibly valid..
Of those, what percentage were invalid users.. (5-8%)
Of the valid recipients, how many of those were slated to be passed to the delivery mechanisms..

Of those, how many were flagged as spam..

Judging by my personal spam/quarantine folder, it's a roughly 1:1, but you have to look at that over a much larger sampling.. If I barely use email, spam to legitimate mail could be as high as 50:1 .. even after rejecting the app. 66% of attempts that are obvious bad actors..

Statistics is no longer a good measuring stick.. number of annoyances per week maybe ;)

It has been my impression that for many years about 90% of the mail a
system typically recieves is spam. Most of it is easy to filter so
the amount that gets into a user's mailbox is a lot less. I sure see
a lot of attempted deliveries on my small MTAs.

I ask because I've ben looking at a paper that asserts that the number
is about 50% and has been for a long time, which just seems wrong.

What sort of numbers to people here see? Are there any credible
published estimates? Way too many of the numbers I see are basically
someone says I set up a mailbox and counted mail messages for a week
and then multiplied by ten billion.
