IMAP download is indeed a lot slower than Google Takeout -- I learned that the hard way. I tried to download it all via IMAP then gave up and switched to Google Takeout. FYI, Apple Mail will read the Google Takeout MBOX file, so that gives you a place to open and browse your archive, if you like.
