Unfortunately, I can’t suggest anything but if its of any help, I have a MBP late 2011 with 4GB of RAM and I have done straight updates from Lion to Mountain Lion and finally Mavericks. Yet I haven’t experienced any problems with Mail busy’s at all. I have the “use classic layout” box found in the viewing tab of mail preferences un-check. Maybe you should try viewing your mail that way and see if the busy’s still occur. Sorry I couldn’t be of any further help. The only other thing I can suggest is a disc permission repair. I don’t normally do that but when I do I find it can clear up any oddities that may be happening at the present time.
