Hi Brian! OK the way I saw written for a iMac is to close down and then switch off then unplug everything external drives usb items and the mains cable wait a minute or 2 then plug everything back in and start up again! So of course if backing up to a external do that 1st and then make sure you eject it safely then do the rest! HTH Colin
