Sounds like Apple Care comes in different flavors or something. I understand
now that iOS devices can only use Apple Care Plus and I only bought them at
time of purchase so was not aware of a 30 day limit. When I bought Apple Care
for my Mac Mini last year (about 8 months after purchase), I did it all over
the phone and my kit was emailed to me. Since the serial number and stuff was
asked for during the phone call, my machine was already registered and I didn't
have to do any follow-up tasks or paper work.
