Thanks for your message. I do understand the dangers involved in enabling and 
using the root user.
And, your diagnosis of the VoiceOver issue was spot on.
Several days ago, I got VoiceOver to come on, and found myself in something 
called "dictation im". Using the mouse, via the keyboard, I was able to get the 
focus back to the keychain dialog. For a few minutes though, I was uncertain as 
to how to proceed.
It's all good now!
