Yes, changing the setting does resolve the secondary problem as well.

Thanks for this.  I' also hopeful that the text of the last message in a
thread will now be read properly.  Here's the problem I had which I hope is
fixed.  I reach a conversation with 2 or more messages.  I expand with right
arrow.  I use VO-J to jump to the text.  As I conclude reading the message,
I delete it from the thread.  When I get to the final message in the
conversation and hit VO-J, I often hear text repeated from another message
in the thread.  It's very confusing when this occurs.  I hope this setting
modification will fix this.  It certainly seems to have fixed that annoying
message when there's only 1 message.  Thanks again.
