Wow! Thanks for all the responses. I really appreciate it.

For now I guess I will connect my monitor and not rely just on an adapter being present.

Not the worst thing in the world but like others, I hope apple fixes this in a future OS release.

Lets hope it doesn't require different hardware but I doubt it.
