the macbook air is designed to be a netbook computer in a sense. due to it's
size, weight and lack of an optical drive, it's designed to go into a woman's
handbag or briefcase, etc. in terms of speed it's got plenty of power to handle
most general needs. If you think of the macbook air as a pocket computer but
just a little bigger (like the days of the HP iPaq and others like it) then
you're pretty much there.

the macbook pro as it's name states is a pro laptop where all the hardware you
need is available. the DVD+/-RW drive, USB's Ethernet and more are stocked in
and can be as powerful as you like with larger screens from 13" to 17", with
the option of antiglare displays, etc. the other beauty behind the macbook pro
is user upgrades. the HDD drive installed on a macbook pro is a standard SATA
hard drive and can be replaced, as well as RAM. the macbook air is reliant on
solid state technology for a drive, thus no hard drive wining away or clicking,
hence it's speed in terms of data throughput.

depending on what you want to achieve with your notebook, the two main options
are the macbook pro and macbook air.

it's worth noting that the macbook pro can be tailor made to use SSD drives at
expense to the user. as SSD is still a new technology, it's still rather
expensive.

either way, you're getting a mac that delivers results you can rely on.

the macbook air is an instant on system because of SSD storage, so between
powering on and desktop, that's a few seconds. then quick access to
applications. however the CPU isn't as fast as say the new quad core macbook
pro's or my dual core i7 system but it's horses for courses.
