I also wonder whether the failure rate of devices with no (or few) moving parts is very high. My wife's old iPhone3G is still kicking along after more than three years and numerous drops although she is itching for the iPhone5 when it comes out. Some stuff doesn't die out, it just gets obsolete. Like my old PowerMac g4 which is soon to hit 10 years and just keeps on working. Makes a nice host for time machine hard drives and keeps my basement office toasty.

I definitely recommend it! My iMac G4 was repaired under it in 2007 when it failed. Apple did a top-notch job and returned it to me jolly quick. in 2009 it was destroyed by a dozen lightning strikes on my property; destroying the power supply and logic board. Since it was then out of warranty, it now sits atop my stand-up stand, as I have no where to store it.

Since then, I bought a MacBook Pro with Leopard and bought AppleCare for it. This year I sent it back as the warranty was about to expire; they sending a box overnight via FedEx, and the replaced the optical drive … CD/DVD ROM and SuperDrive, network card, Airport card, logic board, and Airport card [did not know it was bad], and returned it to me overnight via FedEx. I am on it now. Purchased another MacBook Pro on eBay [won the bid] for $677.00 including shipping with a 500 GB HD [my original has a 160 GB HD]. They even re-installed my third-party software back onto it! It now works better than ever! I'm a real happy camper now!

I also get AppleCare for my iPods! None have failed yet; but, it surely is worth it just for the no-cost phone help!

Applecare, like insurance, is hedging your bets. Could you handle
having to come up with replacement cost if your gadget were to
fail? Apple is betting that more often than not you'll never need
AppleCare, or at least the issues will be few enough to cover
their costs. For me, for my iPhone, I don't plan to do my usual
    5-6 year life cycle so I didn't do Applecare. While I wouldn't
want to pay out to buy another one it is something I could
probably scrape the money together for. Not so much with a laptop.
