I don't want to use external headphones with a mic because I patch the output of my MBP into an "Icom," which is a device for communicating with my hearing aids--turns them into a VERY good headset and also has Bluetooth ability--whereas a headset would sit on top of my hearing aids, which can be somewhat problematic. That's the same reason I don't wanna attach an external mic to the line-in, because I've already got a patchcord hanging off this thing.
