Hi Tim, Marlaina, and Others,

For creating new ringtones from tracks in your iTunes music library, I
think that the easiest way now is to get an AppleScript named "Make
Ringable", which automates the process of creating ringtones from your
own music. You need to download the AppleScript from:
http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=makeringable
and place it in your user account under the Library/iTunes/Scripts
folder. If this is the first time you've used an AppleScript in
iTunes, you'll have to create the Scripts folder. You also need to set
the start and stop time for a section from your selected music track
to be used as a ringtone on the Options tab, before applying the "Make
Ringable" AppleScript. Then the instructions are:

1. Select the track from the music library and then press cmd-i for
Get Info
2. Press on the Options tab.
3. Enter the start and stop time for your ringtone in the
corresponding text fields (this should be less than 39 seconds)
4. Press OK.
5. Since the track is already highlighted, navigate to the Scripts
menu (created when you added the AppleScript) on the iTunes menu bar
(VO-m and VO-left arrow twice), arrow down to "Make Ringable", and
press return.
6. Follow the dialog window prompts. You'll be given the option to
reset the start and stop times to full track play before exiting the
script.

The script will create a ringtone of the appropriate file type, and
name of your choosing, and add it to your ringtones library. The
original music track is unaltered. This should work on any track in
your music library unless you have the early iTunes Music Store tracks
from a few years ago with DRM that prohibits this. And for an easy
way to determine the start and stop times you want to apply, get the
RestartAt AppleScript from Tim's VoiceOver Downloads page:

This will let you start playing any track in your iTunes library at
the time you enter into the dialog window text box. This works the
same way: place the AppleScript in the Library/iTunes/Scripts folder
under you user account, then use it by highlighting a track and
navigating to the "RestartAt" option in the Scripts menu on your
iTunes menu bar.

I wrote up a post for the viphone list, but with details and more time
spent describing how AppleScripts work. If you simply read the
instructions that download with the "Make Ringable" AppleScript, or
that Tim provides on his web site, you don't really need more
information, but if you want to read the viphone list post for more
details, here's the link:
