You are quite correct, Mary.  I do not use the preview pane.  I prefer to have 
each message open in its own window so I may easily reply to each individual 
message in the thread.  When done I simply press Command+W to close the window 
or Command+Option+W to close all of the windows in the thread. While the lack 
of automatic reading now requires only one quick gesture on my TrackPad, it is  
a feature I that I sorely miss.  Prior to this removal of the feature, I could 
simply keep my hands on the keyboard poised for the Command+W so to close 
windows, only.  I am definitely going to turn in a bug report on this one.  I 
realize that some people may not like this feature so I am going to suggest 
something quite radical for Apple, give us a choice.  (Smile)
