Afraid this doesn't solve it.  I'd tried something similar, (however including 
the step of interacting first) but to no avail.

Another issue that just (inadvertently) came to light is the following:
1.  open Addressbook;
2.  simply press command-shift-n to create a new group.  NOte this should be 
tried from outside the groups table.
3.  now try navigating to the groups table and try to interact.  One can 
interact, however navigation (for me at least) isn't possible.
Afraid I have become rather curious about the Addressbook app now, so I'm 
trying to break it in different ways.  I need to get a life or something <smile>
