Keep practicing. When placing your finger at the bottom of the screen, you should drag up until you both feel a vibration and hear a pop. Then raising your finger off the screen should take you to the home, or number one screen. I've been using an iPhone without a home button since the iPhone X was released, and I'm now on my fifth iPhone without a home button. This gesture works like a charm for me.
