I've always done this with a USB keyboard connected, then set up a
Bluetooth keyboard afterward. I can't do that any more because I no
longer have a USB Mac keyboard, and even if I still had the old one, it
had a USB-A connector, and the new machine is all USB-C and Thunderbolt.
If I look in my spare parts and cables collection, I might find an
adapter from USB-C/Thunderbolt to USB-A, but it's all moot because I
don't have the keyboard any more. So then, what's the correct way to get
the Bluetooth keyboard I wish to use properly connected with the new
Mac? I'm thinking I should turn off all devices in the immediate area
that might want to pair with it before starting. This would prevent
potential pairing with the wrong device. I already went through this
with a pair of Airpod Max's, and kept wondering why I was hearing
VoiceOver, but it wasn't coming from my hone, and my phone kept
insisting no such device was connected. Haha on me, that'll teach me,
right? You bet! So I'm not going to go through that again. My phone and
all my wife's equipment is going to be turned off, and only the keyboard
of choice will be on and looking to pair with anything. This should work.
The last time I set up a new Mac, I was expecting to hear a recorded
prompt during setup, advising me to press the letter V on my keyboard if
I wanted to continue setting up the machine with VoiceOver. But that
message never came. Instead, I have to start VoiceOver manually. What is
the deal with this these days? Do I get the prompt message, or not?
Other than that, I think I'm good. I know I don't want File Vault, I
know I don't want the Documents directory in the cloud because there are
things that go in that directory that won't ever be accessed externally
or from any other device. Things that I need to get to on my phone as
well as my Mac, I'll put them in iCloud Drive. Are there any other
gotchas that have been introduced in the past four years that I've
forgotten or should know about?
Thanks in advance.
