Whatever you say Karen.
Whether you know it or not, your computer is full of accumulated stuff, that I call
clutter and garbage. If you are happy migrating this ???stuff??? to a new machine,
then Do whatever works ???best" for you.

brad,
Granted I have still yet to find an inclusive way for me to use Apple products,
but speaking personally, one thing I have kept as a practice over the 30 years
of using computers, is not accumulating the nonexistent garbage you reference.
So, perhaps your choice of phrase from this thread, that you know the best way,
was a poor choice?
You are expert on only one person's housekeeping processes, your own.
Therefore your stance about time machine backup risks, apply only to yourself.
Same can be said for those who prefer trusting their data to Icloud.
Speaking personally, the safest for my own use is physical backup media. I
personally insure mine contain only what I wish preserved, but that is me.
While your stance about time machine is fine...for you, the assumption that
garbage will be transferred only applies to you, or others who are not careful
in what they keep. Making our generalization s something that cannot be said
to apply uniformly to everyone else.
Donna is sending her machine back. after all the issues, that, speaking
personally, makes the most sense.

When restoring from a Time machine backup, you not only restore files, folders
and other data you would like to keep, but you end up restoring all kinds of
trash and clutter that has accumulated over time on the old system.
This is why I prefer not using a Time Machine backup on a new Mac, using this
as an opportunity to make a clean start on the new machine.
You of course are free to make your own choice on how to setup a new Mac, and
you are welcome to transfer all the problematic garbage from the old Mac to the
new Mac if you wish.

Brad,
The problem with starting from scratch is that in theory it goes against the
basic nature of having a mac.
You can, as illustrated by others, carry forward your history, files, folders,
and other content to your new machine, its part of why time machine is so
valuable.
therefore starting from scratch makes little sense from that standpoint.
Otherwise you end up having several computers.
Just my thoughts,
Karen

Donna,
Yes, I read Kliph???s comments, and I know he has done a number of new M1
setups using Time Machine backups.
I still feel starting from scratch is the best approach, but I agree there is
something going on with this machine that should not be happening.
Since you are within your 14 day return window, I agree that taking the machine
back may be the best thing to do.

Brad,
Maybe. But note Kliph's post that he has installed two machines from time
machine backups. Also note my earlier comment that the Apple tech guy did not
believe my troubles are the result of the time machine backup. Personally, I
don't know. I'm not convinced that you are right, but I am also not certain
that you are wrong.

I think you brought your troubles on yourself by doing that Time Machine backup.
Always better to start fresh with a new machine.

I know several VoiceOver users who have new MacBook Airs with the M1 processor,
and none of them have experienced the issues you report.
I think your issue stems from doing the Time Machine backup from your old Mac
to the new M1 Mac.
I don???t necessarily think the macOS update will make any difference, but it
can???t hurt either.
I suggest wiping the Mac, and starting over as a completely new Mac. Then
transfer your old data to the new Mac manually.
I think you will have a lot less trouble doing this.

Hi all,
Recently there has been a discussion about the new MBA, so I thought I would
share my experience.
I unboxed my MBA yesterday afternoon, and it's been nothin but a headache
since. When I booted it for the first time, all seemed fine. But after I
migrated my data using a time machine backup, VO went silent.
Yesterday afternoon I called Apple Accessibility, and spent a half hour on
hold, then another half hour on the phone with some idiot who spent the call
directing me to position the camera on my phone with one hand so she could see
the screen, while she directed the finger on my other hand to select and
activate items on the trackpad. to say the least, the experience was
unpleasant and frustrating, and I finally just gave up and hung up. My husband
and I spent most of last night trying to troubleshoot the problem, as I could
do nothing without sighted assistance. We were not successful.
This morning I called Apple to request a replacement. I spent another half
hour on the phone with a very nice support person, at the end of which, he
directed me to take my computer to the local authorized Apple Service dealer.
My husband and I both just took two hours off work to do that. I just got back
from there. They weren't able to fix it either. He said that it looks like VO
is unable to select a voice, and has recommended that I install the latest Big
Sur update. I'm downloading it now. If that doesn't work, I'm going to demand
a return, and go back to using my 2017 MacBook Pro, which works just fine.
So, that's my experience with the new MBA, FWIW.
Best,
Donna
