E.T. -- The $99 is the current asking price. I actually paid a lot less
for a set of unusual reasons I would likely be unable to reproduce.

I have had a couple Brother models over the past 15 years. I like them
because they directly support Linux, but this one also supports Airdrop,
Google Drive, (for scanning), wifi-direct, nfc, etc., etc.

Here's Brother's page about this device:

https://www.brother-usa.com/products/hll2395dw

The news is not all great. It's wired ethernet is only 100 mbps, and
it's wifi tops out at 801.11n, but that likely helps explain the low
price. Actually, this seems true of quite a few printers still on the
market today, including others discussed on list here recently.

The scan function on the 2395 is flatbed, and very easy to get to. You
just lift up the top of the unit, which is a lid hinged at the back. So,
I'm looking forward to easily performed good scans.

On the other hand there are units today that feature an Automatic Document
Feeder (ADF)
with support for single-pass, dual-sided scanning and OCR. So, for a few dollars
more one might choose a model with such an option and get both sides of
some pages scanned and converted to text in one pass.

All in all, there seem to be pretty good deals on printers right now,
including multi-function devices. This 2395 Brother is the only
multi-function device I've found which does NOT also support fax. I'm
personally glad of that, and a bit surprised to find this printer is
some 4 years old, as multi-function without fax still seems pretty rare
in my recent shopping experience.

As always toner cartridges are something of a hassle. Reviews for the
2395 warn that the default toner cartridge will run out quickly. Well,
that's likely quickly as in most people, not likely as in my situation
where I'll print a couple dozen pages when I print, and then nothing for
a month or two.

The good news with this printer is that you have options. You can even
disable the low toner warning, should you choose, and just keep printing
and printing as the output gets fainter and fainter. Or, you can have
Amazon auto replenish your toner when the printer informs your Amazon
account profile that your toner is low. There are also third party
toner providers with much better prices than genuine Brother. I've
successfully used third party brands without complaints on my previous
Brother devices.

Here's Amazon reviews, including about toner options:

The machine is set up in its location in my home office but not yet on
line. I can't quite figure out how to seat the toner myself, and I don't
want to mess that up, so I'm awaiting sighted assistance Tuesday
afternoon before I power up.

Best,

Janina
