That’s good advice. It works well, and quickly for me, as long as I hold the
phone at a suitable distance. (Holding it too close tends to result in
authentication failures.)

Downgrading to an older device to avoid Face ID is not a good idea. Touch ID
isn’t coming back, so it would be better to adapt to that now rather than in
several years when the older devices cease to be supported by Apple.

Subject: Re: Thinking of Downgrading Back to iPhone 8 Because of Lack of Touch
ID - Finding Face ID not as Efficient and Slower

Hi,

A couple of things to consider:

1. Like with a finger-print iPhone, if the iPhone is off, it will require your
pass-code.

2. Know that as soon as you wake the iPhone, it will start searching for your
face. Consider this for the next item.

3. Make sure that Raise to Wake is turned off. This is in Settings, Display &
Brightness. Disable it as it can cause the iPhone to start searching before
you're ready.

4. As you note during the Face ID setup, the iPhone is looking at your face
from multiple angles. Thus a perfect alignment is not necessarily needed.
Make sure though that the face of the iPhone is pointed towards your face, and
that it is a foot or more away when you hit the side button. As soon as the
side button is pressed, the iPhone will begin searching for your face to
authenticate. If you get the double-haptic vibration, it has accepted your
face and you're ready to go. If you get the triple or quadruple haptic
vibration, then it failed. In that case, press the side button, wait a second
then press the side button again to let it try once more.

5. If there is a notification on the screen, like an iMessage, you can
authenticate with Face ID, then simply double-tap on the notification to go
stragiht to Messages without the need to do the swipe up from bottom to unlock
gesture.

HTH.

Hi, Tim,

I was looking at some responses to the face-id dilemma. I had someone from
Apple Support help me reset my face-id and it worked. However, i tried to
unlock it several times with no success. Is there a certain way I should be
holding my phone to make it work? iI have my attention features off and am
just confused.

Hi,

I don't have any real issues with Face ID. Do you have the Attention feature
disabled? Normally, I just pull out my iPhone, put it in a close enough
proximity to normal position, then press the side button. Within a very short
time, I feel the double-haptic vibration and I'm good to go. It doesn't even
need to be in perfect position. I can have it a little off to the side, or a
little higher or lower than my face, and it unlocks just fine. I only need to
enter the pass-code once every week or two. The times that I do have an issue
with it not recognizing my face, I just lock the screen, wait a second or so
then go through the process again and it unlocks.

I got the iPhone 10S around launch time, and while of course face id
technically works with VoiceOver, I find its much less efficient and
time consuming than touch id. It seems to take more effort than it
did with touch id.

At least a few to several times a day I have to manually enter my
passcode. This was rarely the case with touch id, maybe with touch
id, I might have to manually enter my passcode a few times a week
rather than a few times a day.

I have to concentrate a little bit to get face id to work where as the
touch id "just worked," it was kind of like breathing you never had to
even think about it for a nanosecond.

I wish someone did a study to see how much longer it takes VoiceOver
users to unlock the phone with face id instead of touch id. I would
be shocked if it the same or faster.

It probably takes, I'm just guessing, an extra 1-3 seconds on average
to unlock the phone.

I find it also is a much less natural movement to have to pull the
phone pretty far from my face to unlock it as opposed to using the
fingerprint.

I am curious if the rest of you have this experience, or if you have
gotten face id to the point whereyou think its just as efficient and
does not take any longer than touch id.

I'm not sure if Jonathan Mosen still reads this list but he has
mentioned as an example and data point that he does not miss the
touch id and he does not find the face id to be less efficient.

I would hate to go backwards but I find the face id to be at least a
moderate annoyance when I was used to touch id working nearly
perfectly 99% of the time.

Best,
Mika
