Simon,
Do you get the same choppiness on the MBP as you do on the MBA? I ask
because I'm not seeing that at all on my 2017 MBP with similar specs.
A little quicker processing speed, but nothing to write home about.

Hi,
That's worth a try. Officially, according to Apple, those units only
accept 8 GB of RAM,althoughEveryMac.com
<http://althougheverymac.com/><http://althoughEveryMac.com
<http://althougheverymac.com/>> <http://everymac.com/>says
that they'll take 16 GB. Since you still have the older RAM, it's an
excellent troubleshooting step.

Hi,
4 to 10% is nothing. I have things taking 95% and don't have the
choppiness issue. Your CPU processes things simultaneously and
sequentially sharing the load as tasks are required. You can have a
fast processor, but fewer cores, a fast SSD, but slow bus speed
between the SSD and the CPU. It's a complicated set of parameters
that make things work in an optimal manner. What model of Mac are
you running again? What is the CPU speed and RAM? All under About
this Mac if you need to know that.

Try going into the Activity Monitor and seeing what's at the top

Subject: Optimizing SSD drive
Some time ago I upgraded the 8gigs of ram to 16 on the
MBP and swapped the spinning drive for the SSD.
I don't recall if the issue with Voiceover existed
before then. What happens is often when I am navigating the
Mac, VO will sound like its being throttled back then comes
back quickly. Its random, I never know when or what may
trigger this.
So I will have someone help me put the 8gigs back
tomorrow and see if the issue clears up. But I am wondering
if the SSD is automatically optimized or not. If not, can it
be optimized?
This happens even when I have done clean installs and
have set things up from scratch but I am willing to try
anything to run this down. Thoughts?
