Hi Simon, That's an excellent point about no 3D Touch on the XR – I'd forgotten about that! I should stress that this is just to do with pressing down on the screen, though – the rest of the haptic stuff is there.
To be honest, the lack of a home button is probably an advantage rather than a disadvantage at this point. I can't see Apple ever reintroducing it, so if you're going to be re-learning iOS anyway, you might as well start as you mean to go on. However, note that the iPhone XR feels, at least to me, significantly larger than the iPhone 8. This is balanced out by the fact that it has a better battery. I'm afraid I can hardly get a whole day out of my iPhone 8.
