Caveat Evptor. Cheap becomes expensive. There are some things I will not cut corners on for there are those knock offs that flood the marketplace.

It would have been, but the official Apple adapters are far more expensive. I love Apple, but I tend to never buy some accessories. Cables, watch bands, and some wall adapters are among the items I consider to be so overpriced, but that have safe and workable alternatives available elsewhere, that I don't like to buy them if I can help it.

Alex,

Would it not be worth while contacting apple support or their store to see if you can get one directly from them?

Hi,

I haven't ever found it in the software anywhere.  It's usually physically engraved on the bottom of the MacBook Pro somewhere, but that doesn't help us.  Apple usually has those designators on their site somewhere.  I usually just take the 9-2 identifier and add MacBook Pro Apple and throw it into a Google search and it will come up either on Apple's site everymac.com <http://everymac.com/>.  The before 2012 is a little misleading, but 2012 is when the retina displays and MagSafe 2 charger came out, so they're correct, but those units that you're talking about did use the 60w MagSafe 1 adaptor as you've found.

Tim, where would I find that designator? That's the kind of thing I expected to find in the system report, but I couldn't get anything other than the not-very-helpful "9,2" thing.

    Hi all,
My mother has a 2012 MacBook Pro, and the cord on the charger is
finally starting to wear out. I have no problem getting a charger
from Amazon, but I'm not sure what to get. The only model
identifier I can find in the Mac's system report is 9,2, but all
the chargers online list identifiers that are nothing like that. I
looked on Apple's website and it told me to get a 60w l-shaped
charger, but the ones on Amazon that match that description all
specify that they're for "before mid 2012".

I'm unsure what to do here. Apple made me feel better by saying
that the wrong adapter can't hurt the Mac, but I'd still rather
not spend money on a product that won't work. Can anyone suggest
what I should look for? Incidentally, I'm happier than ever that
Apple has moved to USB-C these days, as finding those adapters is
way simpler. Anyway; any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.
