Scott I am surprised that you have not mentioned the ultimate which is a personal assistant that can wait on you hand and foot. Why, you could stay in bed 24/7 and have all your needs met there. What better? And no I am not talking about a "human" personal assistant, that is archaic. And then all this wonderful technology becomes your worst nightmare when that personal assistant turns on you. Maybe I have watched too much Twilight Zone.

As for the digital assistance, I’m also on the other side of the coin than you
and E.T. I absolutely love having a way to interact with technology through
voice. I have three google home units in my house and will be adding more. I
can just say something like “play ancient aliens on master bedroom TV” and bam
E.T’s favorite show is streaming in 4K on my bedroom big screen. If you’re
sitting there and you wonder say what’s the closest places to get ribs or where
is the closest Chipotle you can just ask google and before you could type the
request you’re hearing the answer with the option to have the map sent to your
phone and a reservation made. If I’m cold I can just ask google to increase
the temperature 2 degrees or hey google, please turn off all the first floor
lights so if they get left on they can be easily turned off and I don’t have to
see them to know which light is on or off. Suppose you’re trying a new recipe
for macaroni and cheese, you can have the google home talk you through it
telling you what ingredients to use and how much so you don’t have to stop and
look it up or worry about reading while cooking. Or how about this, something
as simple as waking up and asking “Hey Google, how’s my day look”. I’ll get a
summary of the traffic on the way to work and any delays, the morning’s
weather, financial reports and even the latest news from one of many sources (I
personally use the BBC). The Google home also recognizes voices so if my
assistant asks google for what’s on his calendar he gets his data, not mine
because Google identifies who you are and uses the correct data sources. I can
write custom applications, one thing I use is a system where I can say, “Hey
google, I lost my phone” and it automatically calls and rings my phone so I can
find it. In other words, you can extend it’s functions your self.
I guess bottom line I like interacting with machines in more ways than
just a keyboard or touch screen. Gives me that star ship enterprise vibe.
Speaking of the enterprise, I can say “hey google, give me some sounds to sleep
to” and I have it play a ten hour long recording of the sound of the enterprise
bridge complete with engine rumble and the occasional indicator beep. These
boxes are so very useful and it’s only going to grow as more and more of our
homes become equipped with artificial intelligence. Frankly, one of the
reasons I think you both have a hard Time getting your head around it is
because Siri is so bad and if that’s the only experience you’ve had I don’t
blame you. However, the rest of the world has moved way beyond Siri. Google
uses real neural net technology so it learns as it goes.
If you want to try a real deal digital assistant and you have the
chance definitely have a conversation with Watson. (The IBM deep machine
learning effort). When you start to talk to Watson you really understand what
Alan Turing meant by his test.

Those of you who say that one should not speculate, about things, how about if

the time as to what might happen next. In fact, the human race do live on
speculation or the world would not be exciting. Life would be dull if one did
not speculate, if things were predictable, then life would be boring! So I
will not apologise when i say what I say about Apple.

I have never been interested in an Amazon Echo as my phone can tell me what I
need to know even if it's a bit dim. Why do I need a speaker who will have a
conversation with me? I don't get why people are excited by an echo. May be I
am missing something? Please enlighten me.

Kawal,
Being this product has not even been previewed at the WWDC yet, speculation can
be a fascinating day dream. Maybe Siri is not up to snuff currently. Does not
mean that it will remain so. Wait for the WWDC before passing judgement.

It's got to do a lot more than that if I were to purchase anything like that.
If it's just a play back device with a few features added and (Siri not as good

Simon, it’s basically Siri in a box and from what I’ve read the box has some

It's probably just a rumor, but it would be cool if they do make one.

Hi.

I was listening to a blindness TechTalk show which is one of the shows that
RNIB broadcast on their RNIB Connect radio. On it they stated that Apple
would be introducing a new Apple Speaker which I suppose would be in
competition with Amazon Echo or something along those lines, I don't know.
Anyone heard about this speaker?

Thanks.

Kawal.
