Hi, Scott. I see what you are saying. Oddly, my Mac is connected to the Network
via a Cat6 cable and my windows PC is WIFI. Yet, even when connected via cable
to the router, the Mac is slower at transferring. This whole thing sure sounds
complicated and above my skill level<grin>.
One thing I am going to try is to copy the iTunes folder to a 6TB my cloud
network drive just to see if the transfer speed is faster on the Mac. Of
course, both are hardwired to the router; so it will be interesting to see what
happens on the mac side and then on the windows side which is connected via
WIFI.
I was sure hoping this was going to be easy when I had the idea to increase the
size of my iTunes folder.
Thanks so much for your help and information.

No not at all, remember especially with that router, each session is handled
separately. THat’s what multiuser MIMO is. So for example, your Mac may be
negotiating a session on 5 ghz channel 36 say and your PC channel 161 on the
5GHz band using a totally separate radio in the router. Remember that router
has 8 antennas not just the 4 big ones in the back so there’s all sorts of
paths in and out of that router. If everything is using the same SSID you
might even have a case where the two devices are split between 2.4 and 5 GHz.
Speeds on 2.4 GHz will be significantly slower than data carried on 5 not to
mention the physical bandwidth is only 20 - 40 GHz on 2.4 Ghz and 80 GHz on 5.
Things like that. Your windows machine may be farther from the router and thus
working better, the channel you’re using on the Mac might be picking up a
network next door and colliding or even being disrupted by something non
netework related like Microwave Ovens or baby monitors etc. Let me know if
that makes sense and how that matches your setup.

Thanks
 and

Yes. But why would the transfer speed be markedly faster on the windows machine

Totally sounds like a WiFi compatibility problem or some sort of interference.
THere’s nothing different that I know of with iTunes on the Mac and on the PC.
The USB 3.0 is definitely not your bottle neck, the setup sounds similar
enough, this sounds like a network issue to me. One thing you can try, if the
Mac is right by the router is to use a wire instead of WiFi and test the
difference. If the speed is still slow you know you’ve ruled out the network
connection or at least the WiFi. It’s possible for example your Mac is to
close to the router and it’s not working at the optimal speed. Especially with
that router as it’s a pretty high power item compared to a lot of consumer
routers. Check your network speed under the WiFi as well and make sure it’s a
reasonable value and that you’re connected using 802.11AC etc.

Just a guess but this feels somehow network related to me.

Tell me about your setup more. What type of Mac, how far is the Mac from the
8500, what sharing protocol are you using are using native iTunes support or
the pro share option.
I’m using a 21 inch iMac which is right next to the router and 8TB my book.
I don’t know how to use share protocols or what they are. The my book uses
something called ready share.

If you’re on your Mac connected can you select the WiFi extended options by
selecting WiFi while holding down option and tell me what your TX rate, channel
and noise / signal DB readings are?
I’m not sure it’s a WiFi issue.
I do have the Mybook drive connected to the USB3 port on the side of the
Netgear 8500.
Unfortunately, I haven’t found an 8TB network drive or I would have just used
that.
However, one thing I did is to set up iTunes on my windows machine. I got some
sighted help to try to download the same TV shows I was trying to download on
my Mac. WindowsItunes isn’t the friendliest program😊.
The same file would take 3-4 hours to download on the Mac, but I downloaded it
between 20-25 minutes on the windows 10 PC. Both PC and Mac are using WiFi.
I’m beginning to think it’s something I need to set up on the Mac to make the
transfer speed faster. The PC was way faster downloading the same file.
Twenty five minutes is way better than 4 hours. I’d hate to see how long it
would take to download a movie on the Mac.
hope this helps.

Here’s another test, could you attach the Mac to a wired port and do a
comparable test to see whether the problem is WiFi related or something further
up the stack?

Thanks and BTW I have the exact setup. I use an 8500 running native Netgear
software (1.2.0.94 I believe) and I’m using directly attached network storage
instead of the built in USB option so there’s a little difference. Be glad to
help though if I can.

Thanks

Hi, all.
I haven’t posted to this list before, but thought I’d see if you guys had any
ideas.
I have a netgear 8500 night hawk router with an 8TB USB 3 drive connected to
the USB3 port on the side of the router.
I am trying to have a universal network drive which I can access from my Mac
and from my windows computer.
Transfer with the PC seems to be OK, but when downloading a purchased movie or
TV show using iTunes on my Mac, download speed is painfully slow. One TV
showmight take as long as 4 hours.
I don’t see anything under Mac or iTunes preferences that I can change to help
with this situation.
Is there anything I need to set on the router under the USB settings that would
make iTunes downloads faster?
Thanks.
