A little googling shows that the frequency ranges in North America are the 
same.  This makes sense, the allocations seem to be regional with the may 
differences being on the 2.4 GHZ band.  The UK for example supports channels 12 
13 and 14, Japan supports a different subset with 14 being limited to 802.11B 
only and so forth.  The other differences are in power output.  Mexico has 
different rating for indoor and outdoor for example, the US limits to 27 DB and 
the Canadians 20 DB.  So the difference between the poster and his neighbor 
running in US mode is probably in power output rather than channels used.

I also read an interesting article about using a magnetron from a Microwave 
oven combined with a morse code key to operate at several hundred to thousands 
of watts of power CW on the 2.4 GHZ band around channel 9 but that’s probably 
frowned upon now.  Also interesting battles between hams and WiFi users but 
there you go.
