Heh and I too made a stink and sent Apple an email.

Good. I'm glad it's working for you as well. I agree that it is even more
important when not connected to power, and I believe that's why some of us are
making a stink. Yes, there are workarounds, but hopefully, these are only
needed for the short-term.

I am. My charger came unplugged. *grin* I'm really glad you mentioned this.
I still think that the time you really need this info is when you're *not*
plugged in, but it's good to know that you can get it when you are.

Hi,
Yes, when connected to power, the percentage is announced, whether I have "Show
Percentage" check or not in the Battery Menu Extra. Hmmm, not sure why you're not
seeing that behaviour.

hi,
I'm not an Apple developer by any stretch of the imagination, but do have a
solid foundation on these sorts of things. If the announcement is available
when your power adaptor is connected, but not when it is disconnected and,
thus, on battery, then the fix should be relatively easy and not a huge rewrite.
Now, the question is just a matter of priority in my world.

Don't get me wrong, I'll never defend all the crazy things FS has done. But
no, if I'm in a meeting or some other public environment where I'm paying
attention to other things, I don't want to have to go into applications, then
into utilities, then Open the Activity Monitor, then bring up the item chooser
so that I can see the battery level. That's too many steps for something so
very basic. If Apple is really committed to accessibility, information such as
battery level should be available to me with the same ease that it is available
to a sighted user.

I have to say I think that’s crazy. It’s not like the data isn’t easily
available. Sure it’s a step backwards, no disagreement there but easily fixed,
I’m sure it will be addressed and the data is still available through alternate
means. We’re talking about adding an Apple script or using a monitoring tool
here not having to work around in some crazy cursor mode and click with a mouse
because the keyboard commands don’t focus correctly or any number of issues you
run in to on the windows side. I would agree if there was no access to battery
level but the fact is there still is and not just in one alternate way but many.
Just stop and think for a half second of all the things Freedom Scientific have
broken in their history and they are a dedicated accessibility company. I rest
my case.

Hi Tim,
I certainly wouldn't relish going back to Windows, but for me it would be a
matter of principle. Having access to battery information is for me a
non-negotiable component of portable computing, and if a company thinks that
blind users should be OK living without that, I'm not OK with them. This is
all the more true in the wake of that video that was shown at the last Apple
event where they touted their commitment to accessibility. So, I wouldn't want
to go back to Windows, but I would feel that this decision by Apple flies in
the face of their own stated values, and leaves me with a computer I'm not
comfortable trusting when i don't have access to AC.
At any rate, hopefully this will be fixed soon, and so will be moot point.
Cheers,
Donna

Hi,
I agree with Donna that it is a step backwards to have something visible to the
sighted user, but not present to the VO user. Scott, that's pleasing if
they're working on it in 10.12.3. All they really need to do is make the
indicator announce/display things exactly the same for when the machine is
using the power adaptor or the battery. It does announce things just fine in
10.12.2 if you're plugged in, but it's absent when on battery power.
I wouldn't go quite so far as to purchase a Windows laptop just because of
this, as there's far too many advantages to my Mac experience to go that
direction.

Hi all,
I just wanted to write to say that I have written to Apple accessibility re the
battery issue, and I would encourage others to do the same. If there is an icon
that sighted users can view, then there also needs to be an equivalent for us.
I'm sorry, but the notion that anyone would rely on a laptop--which
theoretically is intended for computing on the go--without providing them good
access to battery information is ridiculous. Yes, I know. You can go into
Activity Monitor. But that is a fairly time consuming process. And yes, you
can ask Siri. But that's hardly convenient or appropriate if you're in the
middle of a meeting, a class, etc. I had been planning to purchase one of the
new MacBook Pros, but right now, I'm thinking I may follow Jonathan Mosen's
lead and purchase a PC instead.
To my thinking this is absolutely unacceptable. If you agree, I encourage you
to write to Apple accessibility and ask that we at least be given battery
information equivalent to that provided to sighted users.
Best,
Donna
