Jess, I for one am a recent switcher. I was myself a diehard Windows user
and I thought it would always be that way, but I needed a new computer and
Windows 7 was not yet out, Freedom Scientific started doing things that I
did not like, and I joined this list to learn about the Mac as a possible
alternative. Between Mike Arigo's podcast series on the Mac and the
wonderful people on this list, I was converted lock stock and barrel. Yes,
I still like Windows and am thinking of installing it on this computer via
Fusion, but I am not in any real hurry to do that right now, as the Mac
meets about 99 percent of my needs. The answer to whether a diehard Windows
user can be converted depends mostly on the Windows user herself. If you
don't have an open mind, are unwilling or unable to cope with change, are
not truly committed to sitting down and learning a new system, have some
sort of psychological baggage about the Mac or simply don't have the money
for a Mac, then you won't be converted. No one should be forced or coerced
into doing something they don't want to, but I think that to be
closed-minded about other possibilities is a very unfortunate way to be.
Everyone is different, but the first step in becoming a switcher is to
accept the idea that there might be something out there that is better than
what you are used to or could be of some benefit to your entertainment or
productivity. I don't get political about my technology. I am willing to
use whatever can help me get the job done in the most efficient and
cost-effective manner. I see it this way, life is hard and I need all the
tools I can get in my toolbox. Sometimes I need Windows, especially at
work. Sometimes I really need my iPod, like when I am on the go, and
sometimes I need my Mac because I want to use a wonderful, stable computer
system and I have a great deal of respect for Apple and all they are doing
to make technology accessible to everyone. I'm not sure if that answers
your question.
