Over the years the problem I've had is the the various non-Apple routers have been hit or miss on reliability. Some were great, some seemed to drop my devices randomly and often. I eventually got tired of fiddling and paid the extra for the Apple wifi. It's been rock solid for years. One other thing I did which made a huge difference was put it on a UPS. It doesn't have to be a big one, just enough to smooth out all the power burps. Seemed like wifi routers were more sensitive to power glitches than other devices. Usual symptom was I would go to use my wifi one day and not be able to get out to the internet. So I pull the plug on the wifi router, plug it back in and everything comes right up. That kind of silliness ended with the UPS. Of course that was on some non-Apple routers. Last one, which died of old age, was on the UPS so the Apple one got plugged in there as well.

So, you find them more reliable? No, my current router is N, not AC, and can't
cover the whole house. More importantly, it doesn't support any form of NAS,
and I'd rather not buy a wifi hard drive enclosure; it seems like storage would
be more reliable connected right to the router.

As to Airplay, I hadn't thought of that. Can someone briefly explain what the
differences are between the Express, Extreme, and any other models I may have
missed? What, exactly, would Airplay on a router let us do with media playback
around the house? Why would an Extreme router lack a feature an Express one
includes?

You want—no, need—Apple AirPort because Apple makes it and Apple products are

No, seriously, as usual with Apple you get what you pay for. The throughput
has indeed been surpassed by competitors, as has the feature set. But, AirPort
Extreme or Time Capsule will do exactly what you want, all day, every day,
without giving you any trouble at all. That is why I use them. Both software
quality and robustness are simply top-notch.

No, AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule don’t do AirPlay. You need Apple TV or
AirPort Express for that.
