I think its worth trying. All other minor downloads and installations are reasonable along with email processing and refreshing my message list. They are all pretty rapid.
I can tell you that the day I did the update to Yosemite it started around 3 in the afternoon and at around midnight that night it was still going. This was a month or two back so I think it was a combination of both the downloads and installations. I could not believe how long it took!
