Hello Chris,

TextEdit works great for reading Word documents but is certainly limited in its 
formatting capacity.
TextEdit can provide a certain amount of formatting such as bold, italic, 
underscoring, colours, different fonts and sizes, and indents. Sighted people 
can also add tables, but VoiceOver can’t read them properly.
So, for someone who only needs to write letters or simple articles, TextEdit 
works fine. It doesn’t work for anyone having to produce documents with a 
number of different paragraph styles, text boxes, tables, and so on.
You’re also correct in saying that TextEdit won’t open a Pages document.
