While I concur with the recommendation to get the newer models for efficiency reasons, I feel I should point out that the older MacBooks are still on sale with optional SSDs, and that they come with both Ethernet and optical drives which the newer models lack. This curmudgeon happens to think that you got more for your money and that the MacBook Pro was worthy of its name back then, but there's no denying progress at all; you get more Flash, more external connectivity, more efficient processors, more battery power, and more memory for less cost with the current machines. It's up to you which you prefer to go with, and I wouldn't fault you for staying in the past, but you've got to be mindful of your investment. I need to assure you, as someone who tracks the market pretty closely, that there are times when function trumps form, and for most purposes the low-end current MBPs will serve well.
