While I concur with the recommendation to get the newer models for efficiency 
reasons, I feel I should point out that the older MacBooks are still on sale 
with optional SSDs, and that they come with both Ethernet and optical drives 
which the newer models lack.  This curmudgeon happens to think that you got 
more for your money and that the MacBook Pro was worthy of its name back then, 
but there's no denying progress at all; you get more Flash, more external 
connectivity, more efficient processors, more battery power, and more memory 
for less cost with the current machines.  It's up to you which you prefer to go 
with, and I wouldn't fault you for staying in the past, but you've got to be 
mindful of your investment.  I need to assure you, as someone who tracks the 
market pretty closely, that there are times when function trumps form, and for 
most purposes the low-end current MBPs will serve well.
