Unless you really want an optical drive, get the retina model. Swapping
out components can be done but if you do that you'll just end up making
it cost as much as a retina macbook, except with a processor from 2012.
The new retina macbooks have made some impressive improvements with
battery life and a solid state drive, while not as big, will give you a
lot more performance, but using less power and being a lot quieter. And
probably last longer. It's also quite a bit thinner and liter.

Hi,
As mentioned by others here, the non-Retina Display model is an older
considerably slower machine. There certainly are ways of upgrading it to have
an SSD and to swap out the optical drive sliding over your HD into its place,
or just having an SSD. All this can improve the speed and possible storage
capacity of the unit but, in the process, you've increased the cost thus
reducing the savings. If I was purchasing a brand new machine, I'd simply go
with the Retina Display unit as it has a faster processor, faster memory and is
overall a better machine.

That non retina MBP is the 2012 model and now has been discontinued although
refurbed models may still be around.
Besides being non retina, it's thicker and heavier than a retina model and it's
slower due to its older archetecture.
It is more easily upgraded if you choose. You can, and should, swap out that
spinning hard drive and install and SSD but this will raise the price. You can
also upgrade memory.
Still, the Retina model is far superior in my opinion regardless of its screen.

Listers,
I would like to ask you gurus for some advice; is it of any advantage for a
totally blind mac user as myself to have a macbook pro with retina display?
I've just been on Apple's website, building my own macbook pro, and I was
wondering whether the retina display has any bearing on the overall performance
or capabilities of a macbook pro for somebody who will not actually benefit
from the retina visual aspects. Please let me have your very honest views on
that. The non-retina macbook pro with no flash memory but with 1TB serial ATA
drive is significantly cheaper than a corresponding retina display model. It
would make a financial difference for me.
Look forward to your views. Please feel free to e-mail off line if deemed
better or less intrusive for the list.
Thanks a lot.
