Switching is a hassle, but what I did was:
1. Switch all my mailing list subscriptions over.
2. Let the important people know about the change.
3. Reply to all Gmail messages using iCloud.
4. Eventually, set up Gmail to filter nothing and forward everything to iCloud,
not keeping a copy.

Now, even if I get something in Gmail, it arrives via iCloud and I can deal
with it from that account. Unfortunately, I never ran into the problems you are
having and so cannot comment on any possible fixes for them, but I can say that
switching to iCloud wasn't nearly as bad as I anticipated. Pus, the setup for
iCloud mail on new or re-installed devices could not be easier, compared to all
the bother of configuring Gmail or other accounts, especially those codes you
need to use if you use two-step verification for Gmail.
