Hi Chris,

Well, regarding the size of the hard drive, this is why I'm purchasing from
Apple rather than from the store. The drive can be configured, which is not
the case in the store. The processor speed cannot be modified. I'm hard
pressed to imagine a scenario where I'll need more than 4 GB of RAM, but if
I'm mistaken, please enlighten me. Thanks.

Les

You are correct that the processor is not upgradeable so if you can't afford
to get everything at once the processor is one thing you'll be stuck with
for the life of the machine. RAM is pretty easy to upgrade. The downside is
you will have two slots with two 2GB SO-DIMMs so to upgrade to 8GB you'll
have to take the existing two out and throw them away or sell them to
somebody else. That said, I have 3GB in my older model MacBook Pro and that
works quite well. So 4GB should last a bit before you spring for the bigger
RAM. I'm told you can do a hard drive swap as well but it involves pulling
out a lot of tiny screws and, as you mentioned, moving all your stuff from
the old drive to the new one. So if you can afford it I'd get a bigger drive
now but that's not something you have to live with down the road. Of course
I'm getting along pretty well with only a 111GB drive so 320GB would be
downright roomy.

Hello, I have made the decision to buy a macbook pro. I wanted to go
for the 15 inch model (because the 17 inch only has a better screen and
would drain the battery more), i want to get the glossy display because I
dont want to spend more on the matte version. It is still a lot of money for
me though so I would like to save where I can. I have heard that it is
possible to get applecare after the purchase date, that would save quite a
bit. Is it difficult to apply for it later instead of date of purchase and
is it more expensive?
The other options that I can select now and which I am not sure
about are clock speed and internal memory. I know i will get the 500gb
7200rpm harddrive.
The 3.0ghz processor version is a lot mroe expensive, about 270 euro
I think but I guess it is not possible to install a new processor later and
I want to use this laptop for at least 3 years and I want it to work well
with the new snow leopard so I guess it is worth it.
I guess I could save a bit on the harddrive but I have no wish to
update it soon after getting my laptop and having to reinstall mac os x when
I can already get it with a good hd for not much extra.
What I am not sure about though is the internal memory. It comes
standard with 4gb and I would like to upgrade it with an extra 4gb for use
with the new operating system in a few months. this would be VERY expensive
though, about 900 euro. I wodner, is it possible to upgrade this later? Is
it possible to use memory with a higher clock speed then the standard memory
that has been included for example 1366mhz? I am not sure why this memory is
so expensive, i think i bought some ddr3 memory about 2 years ago that was
a lot less expensive then the price apple is asking and it had a higher
clock speed. Or do laptops use special memory that desktops cannot use?
Thanks in advance for your help everyone,
        Greetings, Anouk
