Hi,

Probably.  Macbooks run quite hot especially the white plastic ones, 
and I've seen the white ones run on full fan throttle with just 
Safari and Mail open if they are not on a good conductive surface. 
I've also seen a lot of dust build up in the cooling slots of the 
white ones, and on one, I've seen a bad battery cause extra heat when 
connected via AC adapter.  If you have a friend with the same 
computer, try swapping batteries for a day to see if that makes any 
difference.
But in general, I'd say it's common.
