Hi Scott: Well when I first got the ipod I pluged it into my ibook and the first thing I did was get a software update because it asked me if I wanted to upgrade. Spoken menus were on by default because of course vo was, and that's what the manual said would happen. It didn't speak at first and I was playing around with it and when I did get it to finally talk it was in another language, so I reset the ipod by pluging it back into the computer and choose the restore factory defaults. Well that fixed the language issue but the main menu wouldn't speak. So I thought ok well I'll just download itunes for windows and try that. Well of course the ipod had to be reformated for windows before I could put anything on it, so I did that and reloaded my music which I transfered via a network connection from my ibook to my pc but still no better luck. I guess I'l just have to call apple care and see if they can help me resolve this, but thanks for trying to help me.
