So it looks like there are several ways to compile a child document: * compile as standalone (using its own preamble, no resolution of references to siblings or parent), * compile with \includeonly using "old" *.aux files, * compile with \includeonly, updating *.aux files, * compile the parent. I see use cases for all of them. Independent of this, caching *.aux files will save some otherwise needed (second or third) latex runs in any case and also with standalone documents. Günter
