Testing the new memoir install with a pure latex file might be a further step to localize problems. Is there some changelog or news file for the new memoir version? Maybe the LyX layout needs adaption (or is there a LyX *.layout file that comes with memoir). > However, when I select the memoir book class for a document I'm > writing, I get an error related to a section much later in the outline > than where I'm currently working. LaTeX errors in packages are sometimes hard to trac/localize: Have a look at Document>LaTeX log, start with a smaller example, try to isolate the problematic part. Alternatively, export to LaTeX, run "by hand" ... > The errors are that font commands (e.g. \sl and \rm) are > not supported, These are obsolete since several years, maybe the new memoir class decided to drop backwards compatibility. You might need to have a look at your custom LaTeX preamble and the layout and module files to find where this first and second definition takes place. Again, as this can be hidden in a package this could mean gradually removing all special packages and customization. Günter
