Well, I am using a debug build now because I wanted to help tracking down the 
bug. It is frequent enough to have become a serious annoyance. But I started 
experiencing the problem (and started this thread) with the standard build. 

So what Abdel's message seems to imply is that either:

1. the assert problem is not related to the crashes I experienced originally

or 

2. I somehow was unwittingly using a debug build before recompiling Lyx with 
the debug option


I'll look into the second option, but i doubt it is the case. Which means I am 
at sea once again.
