Well, sigh. I was certainly quite dense when I wrote this yesterday and I really have no excuse. One of the local folks whacked me with a clue stick, and reminded me that displaying the pdf in xpdf, then printing it to a file, produces a .ps file. That can then be converted to .eps and trimmed.
